WIP - Realistic Wings by Sunnybrook1 WIP - Realistic Wings by Sunnybrook1

Well, this has sort of become the splash page for the rest of my tutorial, links are below! :D

Each feather is made out of straightened hanger-wire with two pieces of fabric painted back-to-back over it (think fabric sandwich, with the wire on the inside).

I've added more secondary cover-feathers since these shots, I've replaced the circulation-cutting arm brace with a glove, and I still have to add the arm-hiding fabric/feather combo, but I'm really excited about how these look~

Want to make your own? Check out my budding tutorial!

Hey! I was looking at your tutorial for your wings (awesome by the way) and thought how much cooler it might be if I used real feathers instead of cutting out my own. In order to do this, however, I would need to know how many feathers you personally used/made, so that I could buy the correct ammt. Thanks for your time in advance.

Huh, I'm not sure I understand your query. There aren't any REAL feathers this large, which is why I made my own. Do you mean to cover the fabric feathers in real ones, like this?

Sort of, there are places online where I can buy some pretty large feathers, but only one feather per perchase, so I was just wondering how many actual feathers you cut out, that you used, so I could get an idea of how many feathers I would need. This would include the down feathers, secondary feathers and primary feathers. Thanks for getting back to me, I hope this clears up my question.

Ah, gotcha - well, for my crow's wings (which these ended up being) I used 20 large feathers per wing (13 primaries, 7 secondaries) and about 43-45 coverts - still working on the arm-cover/down feathers, but pretty much enough to cover your arm around & then 2-3 inches hanging off it.

So TOTAL for two wings would be 40 large feathers (23 primaries, 14 secondaries) and 86-90 coverts.

:) Does that answer your question?

These are fantastic! I understand you're not selling them at the moment, but I was using these for a conceptual design project for school that I need to budget out, and I was wondering if you had a rough estimate on what you would charge to make them? Or at least how many hours they take to make?

Ah, I'd charge $800-$1000 to make, which amounts to about $200 in materials (which varies) and 40-50 hours of work, also shipping. ^^; They're a labor of love, they are...

Hi, I would like to know if you sell these set of wings. I would be highly interested in buying these or do you know where I can buy these?

Thanks,

John

Oh no :( thank you for replying though. Please let me know if you do reconsider. By the way, how many hours do you think it would take a not so crafty person to make these?

I saw this a couple months back before i had a deviant art. I was looking for moving wing tutorials for my humming bird costume I'm going to make for Halloween. These are so beautiful and look so natural with the fold and then fully extended. Now that i have an account I thought id say thanks for the awesome tutorials and I'll definitely post a picture of my wings if i make them. Awesome work!

I'm hoping too. ^^; Currently working on getting over some self-imposed (and practical/budgeting) speedbumps, not to mention sizing these for customers I've never met. I've only made these for people I've met in real-life so far, I'm struggling with what measurements to ask for to guarantee that custom wings will actually fit! So far remade the harness design to be adjustable, but still testing how to string the wings since I want the wings to come finished w/out any real adjustment needed (for those uncomfortable w/their own skills in doing so).

Will probably be easier to first make some basic wing shapes/colors and put them up for sale for those who want to modify them, like how some costumers do with resin bases~ :plotting:

Awesome!
Let me know when you are open.
Resin's a bit heavy though. Not sure if it would make good wings.

What the... holy hella f*ck.

Firstly, that's f*ckin cool, like the coolest thing freeking ever. Secondly, IS THAT YOU??? YOU LOOK LIKE ME. OR I LOOK LIKE YOU.  I'm like sitting here genuinely shocked because our faces are a little different but we're like the same size with the same hair - like literally the same hair - color, frizzyness when in a braid, length of braid, and even where we part it - and ok not quite similar faces but I'm still extremely confused by this o.o

LOL, you better link it if you do! Though it may be faster to just photograph & edit your face onto this. ^^; A bit creepy sounding, but more practical.

But the wings are a lot of fun once they're done! :thanks: Even if they're made of cheap posterboard or cardboard~
