WIP - Realistic Wings by Sunnybrook1 WIP - Realistic Wings by Sunnybrook1

Well, this has sort of become the splash page for the rest of my tutorial, links are below! :D

Each feather is made out of straightened hanger-wire with two pieces of fabric painted back-to-back over it (think fabric sandwich, with the wire on the inside).

I've added more secondary cover-feathers since these shots, I've replaced the circulation-cutting arm brace with a glove, and I still have to add the arm-hiding fabric/feather combo, but I'm really excited about how these look~

Hi Sunnybrook!
I'm working on my version of these, will probably make my feathers out of cardstock. Is there any benefit to making them from double painted fabric?

Well, they last longer, can take more of a beating, maintain their shape better after contact with water (after drying out, anyways - you can iron them flat!), and are mostly silent when moving (aka feathers won't make a "clacking" sound when hitting each other).

But cardstock is thinner, cheaper, easier to color and/or paint, and lighter-weight. I've made a posterboard-pair of wings myself, and they were fun as well, albeit not quite as impressive as a fully finished fabric pair. So go for whichever matters most to you.:D

Are these wings able to be flipped forward like that of an owl doing a threat display?

Tried, and nope  because (a) the way I've strung the feathers together means they're attached to me at the waist, preventing them from flipping straight up, and even if I detached that (b) they're pretty heavy, and won't stay up long enough for a proper display. :I

Oh well, still fun to wear~

Wow...beautiful. For halloween my 6 year old daughter wants to be a pegasus with wings on her arms that move. (Yes, she has very specific ideas...a budding costume designer/maker.) Do you think this design would be too heavy/difficult for a 6 year old?

If you were helping her with the wire-bending (which takes a fair amount of hand strength and coordination) I think you could manage it. If you are short on time or funds try poster-board instead of fabric & hotglue it to the wire shafts.

Not quite as comfortable & long-lasting, but quite light, affordable, and easily colored. Just have her wear something with long sleeves, or sew a piece of fabric into a simple sleeve for her to wear the wings over. And since her arms are shorter than an adults you probably won't have to make as many feathers, which should help with the weight.

 :D

I need to make something like that now. I already tried articulated bat wings, but that was half done and way too hard.

This design should work well for bat wings, and be even easier since there are less "shafts" and instead of separate feathers it's all one piece of stretchy fabric~:D

Lemme know if you try it!
