WIP - Realistic Wings by Sunnybrook1 WIP - Realistic Wings by Sunnybrook1

Well, this has sort of become the splash page for the rest of my tutorial, links are below! :D

Each feather is made out of straightened hanger-wire with two pieces of fabric painted back-to-back over it (think fabric sandwich, with the wire on the inside).

I've added more secondary cover-feathers since these shots, I've replaced the circulation-cutting arm brace with a glove, and I still have to add the arm-hiding fabric/feather combo, but I'm really excited about how these look~

Nice work! So...between the materials and tools, how much did it set you back?

Materials vary, since you can use stuff you already own or can scavenge - fabric cost is the biggest variable - but range is around $250-$300. Tools? Not bad - a good set of lineman's pliers will serve you well, since my method involves a lot of wire bending, though they only cost about $15-$20. Metal file is useful and cheap, disposable paint brushes are easy and disposable cups work well for holding paint/glue. :hmm:

The biggest investment of all is time and effort really - bending the wire for & painting each & every feather (not to mention the coverts!) is tedious and time consuming, and is why I'm not currently open for commissions. ^^; The results are totally worth it though! :D

You'd be surprised at the amount of creative effort and ingenuity people put into cosplay, there's some pretty cool stuff out there! :D And you don't have to share a hobby to enjoy the results~

That's still a work in progress, actually... ^^; For my Raven costume I used a long-sleeved shirt with holes cut out for the wings, and I've seen others use faux fur.

I am as yet unsatisfied with my own attempts:

This wing design, would totally enable making a costume for the Sorceress of Greyskull, from the He-Man, Masters of the Universe cartoon show!  Awesome work!  You are very creative!

Ah yes, some slight modification of the design (aka it seems her pivot point would actually be in the armpit-region), but the feather-making methods would still work - let me know how it turns out! :la:

Hi Sunnybrook!
I'm working on my version of these, will probably make my feathers out of cardstock. Is there any benefit to making them from double painted fabric?

Well, they last longer, can take more of a beating, maintain their shape better after contact with water (after drying out, anyways - you can iron them flat!), and are mostly silent when moving (aka feathers won't make a "clacking" sound when hitting each other).

But cardstock is thinner, cheaper, easier to color and/or paint, and lighter-weight. I've made a posterboard-pair of wings myself, and they were fun as well, albeit not quite as impressive as a fully finished fabric pair. So go for whichever matters most to you.:D

Are these wings able to be flipped forward like that of an owl doing a threat display?

Tried, and nope  because (a) the way I've strung the feathers together means they're attached to me at the waist, preventing them from flipping straight up, and even if I detached that (b) they're pretty heavy, and won't stay up long enough for a proper display. :I

Oh well, still fun to wear~
