Questions!

Me: “Did you have any difficulty following the tutorial?”

Kerorarin: I think what made the whole project so successful for us was the fact that we had 3 different people working on it, so if someone didn’t quite get one part of the tutorial; there was a good chance another one of us would catch on more quickly.

Also, 50% off Joanne’s fabric coupons saved our butts on so many occasions it’s not even funny.

Because of that we didn’t really have many issues with the tutorial, until we got to the coverts. The fault was really on us, because we were moving too fast. When we began attaching the coverts to the primary feathers (My Zapdos wings were the guinea pig)… instead of testing if they folded, we quickly attached them all on one side, and then the other. As soon as we reattached the wing to the harness we figured out that the wing would no longer fold! We panicked had to rip off all the coverts and then very carefully reapply them in a pattern that allowed them to fold! I was very pleased that we only messed on one wing and not all six.

We did make a couple changes to the final design, mostly on the arm covers, because we were running out of time. The con was unfortunately on the same day as graduation do out schedule was super wacky!

First—We used a set of industrial Velcro to clip the covers into place, so they wouldn’t hang loosely.

Second—We also coated the entire cover the feathers from a boas to any hide any folds the covers made when we moved. The boas however, were always what we intended to use for the covers for cost sake.

Third— Ribbon was tied to our arms and the elastic part of the harness to keep it from sagging.

These were all changes we made for either the sake of budget, time, or both. Besides the three I mentioned we stayed completely true to the tutorial.

Me: “Were the wings super heavy at all? Easy to move in? Did everyone like them?

Kerorarin: First off let me say that the costumes were super popular. At some points we were standing for a good five minutes because so many people wanted pictures!

It was really amazing to see our hard work get so much recognition!

We entered them in a contest and made sure to give credit to you as the designer for the wings. It was actually really interesting, because two of the craftsmanship judges mentioned reading through your tutorial before! Unfortunately though, we didn’t place, but many people stopped us on Sunday to ask about the wings and take pictures!

Luckily, mobility wasn’t really an issue for us! A-kon just moved to a much larger hotel to hold its convention so there was a lot of room to pose and not get in anyone’s way (We took up a lot of space!)

The wings really weren’t all that heavy, unless we were posing for long periods of time, and folding them across our chests made them easy to carry around when we walked. I was still able to buy things and hide everything under my arm covers!!

Me: “Best/worst parts of the whole thing?”

Kerorarin: This was just my opinion—

I’d have to say I think the worst part for us was painting all of the feathers, just because there were SO many. The fact that we were painting inside of a garage in the middle of Texas didn’t help either!

I think what also helped a lot was your youtube videos and live stream, the movement video really at some points helped us visualize how the whole set would look together and ultimately helped us make that final mental image for your tutorial!

In the end your wings were the most challenging thing we’ve ever worked on, but I think was the most fun and rewarding too. It was actually the Articuno cosplayer’s first cosplay ever! The whole thing was just an amazing experience, I can honestly say your tutorial brought us closer as friends, and a cosplay group! ❤
